Resolution

What Is?

Resolution describes how many pixels make up an image or screen, expressed as width x height (for example, 1920 x 1080). The more pixels packed into the same physical space, the sharper and more detailed the picture appears.

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between that width and height, written as a simplified ratio like 16:9 or as a decimal value (width divided by height). Two screens with very different pixel counts can still share the same aspect ratio if their width-to-height proportion matches.

Historically, 4:3 was the standard for early televisions and computer monitors. As displays evolved, 16:9 became the dominant widescreen standard for TVs, monitors, and video, while ultra-wide formats such as 21:9 and cinema formats like 17:9 (digital cinema, precisely 256:135) are used for movies and specialized displays.

Many resolution names are abbreviations accumulated over decades of display, broadcast, and digital cinema history — from VGA and XGA in early computing to FHD, QHD, and UHD in modern screens.

The table below lists common resolution standards with their pixel dimensions and aspect ratios. Below that, a calculator lets you enter any width and height to instantly find the simplified ratio and decimal value.
